The Skill My IT Degree Never Taught Me
I spent over a decade working across various roles — from local projects to remote contracts with companies in the UK, building websites, email systems, and CRM solutions. My IT degree taught me how to write clean code and solve technical problems. But it never taught me the most important skill in tech: how to communicate effectively.
I struggled early on. I knew my code worked, but I couldn't explain why to clients. I understood the technical solution, but I couldn't present it in meetings without freezing up.
I had the skills, but not the language to advance my career. I watched it happen over and over: colleagues with weaker technical abilities got promoted because they could present well.
After 10+ years in IT, I decided to fix this problem — not just for myself, but for other tech professionals facing the same challenge. I got my TEFL certification and specialized in Business English. But I didn't stop being a developer. I used my technical background to create something different.
